I got a stiff neck the other day after waking up and it got better the next day but i guess i slept wrong again and it came back even worse and i just want to get rid of this thing i don’t know if I pulled some kind of muscle or something. But i hear a cracking noise sometimes i don’t know what that is but I think it is associated with it. But how do I sleep to not get this stiff thing anymore?

I have similar problems. Part of the answer depends on whether you sleep on your side or on your back.

If you are a side sleeper, you need to pay attention to the angle of your head and your spine. If you pillow is too thin, your head will be bent and leaning towards you pillow at a downward angle. A thicker pillow (firm foam usually works best) will get your head higher and keep your neck on the same angle as your spine.

If you are a back sleeper, you need to have a little extra support under the outer edge of the pillow that supports your neck. A small towel folded under the outer edge of your pillow will help.

Hope this helps. I was literally at the chiropractor this morning getting my neck adjusted.

There are specialist pillows you can buy to help avoid neck pain and stiffness maybe it wouldn’t hurt to invest in one. Ikea also sell pillows for people who sleep on their sides, on their fronts, and on their backs they would be a cheaper option if you can get to an Ikea.

there are a number of ways to avoid this. One is sleep with a soft cervical collar on. Two, use only one pillow and sleep on side. Three, use a cervical pillow that is contoured but not a cylinder. Four, if you a back sleeper use no pillow except under the knees. Five, avoid sleeping on the stomach. Lastly start to do some strengthening exercises for the neck. These movements include the shrug, lateral raises, cervical extensions and curls, and isometrics. If you are unfamiliar with these movements then see a physical therapist or a least a qualified trainer to show you the movements. If you get to a therapist make sure that they do a postural evaluation to rule out any deviations that might be present causing the problem.
