I am a chiropractor that only focuses on conditions involved with the musculoskeletal system. I find it hard to legitimize myself when the next chiro down the street claims to cure cancer, etc… I would like feedback from MD’s on how they feel about legitimate chiropractors….Thanks
From Tempe Chiropractor, post What do medical doctors think of legit chiropractors that only treat musculoskeletal conditions?

I am fine with “reformed” chiropractic who deal only with MSK problems. Chiro is at least as effective as any other modalities for MSK, mostly back.
NONE of us is very good with back pain, it is part of the human condition as we haven’t adequately evolved to walk upright yet.
My question would be since the majority of chiropractors still believe in the woo…how can you really stay in that profession?
Well, I’m not a doctor, but I do have a genetic musculoskeletal condition. The problem that I have had with Chiropractors of all persausions (the quacky and the not-so-quacky) is that they are forever trying to “change” the skeleton God (or my genes, however you like to took at it) gave me
Y’know, “if we are able to move this there, then you’ll have a curve here that moves the head there…blah, blah, blah) and then I just end up hurt and broke…
I have had MD’s send me to DO’s (and from what I hear, DO’s are different here in the states) who specialized in sports or manipulative medicine – - so not all of them (MD’s) are ‘against’ some of the treatments used in chiropractics – I do believe however, that chiropractors as a rule suffer the same reputations as lawyers (I’m sure you have heard the joke – 99% of them give the rest a bad name)
if you knew what the definition of chiropractic was, you would know it is not about “treating” anything.
I’m a Non US trained Osteopath and struggle with the medical profession as well at times.
Whether you are an Osteopath or a chiropractor you don’t cure anything.
What we do with our hands is assist nature and help change the blood supply, fluid dynamics and nerve supply to tissue. This can be far reaching but has its limitations and is finite. We cannot treat cancer by telling cells to die so not everything is possible. However, I don’t believe that we can affect the musculo-skeletal system only. To a certain extent it is possible to treat viscera.
So long as we are aware of what we realistically can and cannot do and refer appropriately it is possible to build good relationships with the medical profession.
From the small practice I have started up in a rural New Zealand town visiting the GP’s and telling them about Osteopathy didn’t help me get referrals from them> However writing letters of referral to them with a list of clinical tests I had done and reasons why manual therapy was not appropriate for them did. I suspect this is because they now know I screen my patients properly and know my limitations.
Thats all any primary care practitioner would like from anyone they refer to.
